A Telegram DM is just a private one-on-one chat. There is no separate inbox, no request folder you have to accept first, and no button labelled DM anywhere in the app. The question of how to dm on telegram is really two questions: how you find the person, and whether their settings let your first message in.
The first part has four answers, depending on where you know the person from. Most of the confusion sits in the second part, so it gets its own section further down. Whether you ask how do you dm on telegram or how do i dm someone on telegram, start with whichever of the four routes matches what you know about them.
A name, a username, a group, or a channel.
How do you send a message on Telegram?
For anyone already in your contacts, sending a message takes four taps. The steps below are for the phone apps; the desktop and web versions follow the same order with a mouse.
- Open Telegram and tap the pencil icon (Android) or the compose icon in the top corner of Chats (iPhone).
- Pick a name from the contact list, or type part of a name or an @username into the search field at the top.
- Tap the result. A chat window opens, even if you have never talked before.
- Type in the message field and tap the paper-plane icon to send.
Those four taps are the whole answer to how to send a message on telegram for a saved contact. One tick next to the message means the server has it; two ticks mean the other person opened the chat. There is no separate delivered state.
Telegram Desktop and the web version
On a computer, how to send a message in telegram is the same idea. Click the search bar at the top of the chat list, type the name or username, open the chat and press Enter to send. Shift+Enter adds a new line without sending. The desktop app keeps its login in a folder called tdata, and whether you run it installed or as a portable copy that carries its own tdata changes nothing about messaging, only where the session lives. The one thing the desktop and web apps cannot do is open a secret chat, which comes up again below.
Searches phrase it many ways: how to send message on telegram, how to send message in telegram, how do you send messages on telegram, how can i send message on telegram, how do i send a message in telegram. Some ask how to send dm on telegram, how to send direct message on telegram or how to send personal message on telegram. The steps above answer all of them for people you already know. The other three routes are for people you do not.
How do you DM someone on Telegram you have not saved?
Here is how to dm someone on telegram when they are not in your contacts. You do not need their phone number. With a public username, type it into search with or without the @, open the result and write. A link in the form t.me/username does the same from a browser or another app. This is the most common answer to how do you dm someone on telegram when all you have is a handle from a website or a bio.
When all you have is a phone number
With only a phone number, the route is narrower. Telegram can open a chat from a number through a t.me/+ link, but only if the owner allows people to find them by number. Our piece on writing to a number you never saved covers that link and why some numbers show nothing. Saving the number as a contact is the old way, and it leaves an entry behind in your list; if you later want those entries gone, deleting Telegram contacts so they stay deleted takes one more setting than people expect, because a synced phone book puts them straight back.
Either way, the chat opens on your side immediately. Whether your first message is accepted is decided by the recipient, not by how you found them.
How do you DM someone in a Telegram group?
This is where most people get stuck, because a group looks like it should have a private-reply button and it does not. Searches like dm telegram group usually mean exactly this. Here is how to dm someone on telegram group chats: tap their name or profile picture on one of their messages. Their profile opens. Tap Message (or the speech-bubble icon) and you are in a private chat with them, outside the group. Nobody in the group sees it, which is all most questions about how to send private message on telegram group chats are really asking.
On Telegram Desktop, click the name above their message, or right-click it and pick the option to view the profile, then click Send Message. That covers how to dm on telegram group chats and how to dm in telegram group chats on every app.
When the group hides its member list
Since a December 2022 update, admins of groups with 100 or more members can hide the member list, so you cannot browse it to find someone. You can still tap the name on any message they have posted. Someone who has never posted is out of reach: you have no way to reach their profile from inside the group, and that is deliberate. The same goes for anyone who joined but stays silent: what Telegram shows to members and what it shows to scraping tools is not the same list.
Moving between a DM and a group
Groups themselves are easy to find; searching Telegram for public groups to join works from the same search bar you use for people. They are harder to manage once there are dozens of them, and quitting all your groups at once is a common clean-up step after a period of joining too many. Pulling people the other way, from a DM into a group, has its own rules: sending an invite link or adding someone directly are two different actions, and direct adds run into caps that no member-adding bot gets around.
One more option sits between a DM and a public message. Reply to someone's message in the group and mention their @username. They get a notification, everyone else can read it, and it works even when their privacy settings refuse private messages from strangers.
Can you send a private message to a Telegram channel?
A channel is a broadcast: only admins post, and subscribers usually cannot write anything back. For years the answer to how to send private message in telegram channel feeds was that you could not, apart from the comments section of a linked discussion group, which is public.
Telegram changed that in June 2025 with channel Direct Messages. A channel's owner switches it on under Channel Settings, Direct Messages, and a message bubble then appears in the channel's bottom bar. What you send goes to the channel's owner and admins as a private conversation, not to the feed, and they answer on behalf of the channel rather than from their personal accounts. Owners can also set a fee per message, paid in Telegram Stars, so on some channels writing in costs you something. No message bubble means the owner has not enabled it, and the only other route is a contact handle they list in the description.
Channels are also where most of the content people forward into DMs comes from. A post can be forwarded into any private chat with the share arrow, and the limits of what a forward bot can actually reach explain why some channels block it. Saving a channel's files outright is a separate job, covered in our guide to downloading a channel's media.
Why won't my Telegram DM send?
Telegram rarely says no in plain words. Here is what each refusal usually means.
Their privacy settings. Under Settings, Privacy and Security, Messages, a user can choose who may start a chat with them: Everyone, or My Contacts and Premium Users. Telegram introduced that option in January 2024 as a Premium feature, and in March 2025 added a second one that charges non-contacts a fee in Stars for each message. Hit one of those and the app tells you the person accepts messages only from contacts or Premium users, or shows the price before you send. A telegram direct message to that person is not possible on your side until you meet the condition. People you already have a chat with are not affected.
You are blocked. Telegram does not announce a block. Your messages stay on one tick, their last-seen time disappears, and their photo may vanish. Nothing on your side fixes it.
Your own account is limited. If Telegram has restricted your account for spam, its spam FAQ says you can still reply to people who wrote first and message people who have your number saved, but new chats with strangers fail. That usually follows reports from recipients. Report tools work the same way in reverse, and our look at what a mass report bot can actually do explains why a pile of reports is not an instant ban. Check your own status with the official @SpamBot account.
Messages stuck on a clock icon
A clock instead of a tick is not a refusal at all. It means the message has not reached Telegram's servers yet, usually because the connection is down or blocked on your network. Waiting for the network to return often clears it, and where Telegram is filtered, setting a SOCKS5 or MTProto proxy in the app is the built-in fix. A message that leaves the clock and gets one tick has arrived.
Secret chats and other kinds of direct message
Every ordinary DM on Telegram is a cloud chat. It is encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and synced across all your devices, which is why you can start a chat on your phone and finish it on your laptop. A secret chat is different: it is end-to-end encrypted, lives only on the two devices that started it, and can be set to delete messages on a timer. To open one on a phone, go to the person's profile, tap the three-dot menu and choose to start a secret chat. The macOS app has them too; Telegram Desktop on Windows and the web version do not.
So if you want to know how do you send a private message on telegram in the strictest sense, the secret chat is that answer. For most people a normal DM is private enough, since nobody outside the chat sees it.
Scheduling, editing and keeping a copy
Ordinary chats give you more control in other ways. Holding the send button lets you schedule a message or send it without sound. A long-press lets you edit a sent message or delete it for both sides. Rich messages with buttons are usually built through a bot, and sending PostBot posts from your own account is how those get into an ordinary chat. When a conversation matters, you can keep a copy: exporting a chat's history from Telegram Desktop saves a private chat to HTML or JSON on your computer.
Sending the same DM from many accounts
Everything above is one person writing to one person. Some readers come to this question from the other end: they need to send a telegram dm to a list of people, from several accounts they manage. That is a different job, and it is where Telegram's limits stop being a privacy setting and start being a spam system.
Telegram Solutions is a Windows desktop panel that runs the accounts you bring, and its Mass DM module sends a message from each account to a list of usernames you supply. The walkthrough below shows the module's setup in the panel.
The honest limits matter more than the features. Software opens the same chats you open by hand, so every recipient's privacy setting still applies, and every unwanted first message is a chance to be reported. No daily cap for user accounts is published anywhere; the per-day figures that circulate are community observations, not policy. Our breakdown of what a bulk DM bot really delivers walks through what reaches an inbox and what does not, and for many campaigns posting into groups rather than private inboxes is the better fit. Telegram's terms forbid spam, and no tool changes that.
